I have been in the music and creative industry for over 10 years. I have had many conversations with artists about being frustrated with their lack of growth. Over the years, these are probably the Top 5 things I’ve come to notice that has hindered artists in their careers. With a little motivation, creating a strategy and providing a few tweaks, I’ve been able to help artists to readjust their approach and bring better brand awareness to their fans.
1. Don’t Spam
You ever get home, check your mailbox and are overwhelmed by the amount of junk mail? Out of the 20 pieces of content, there may be one piece that I may be interested in for about three seconds. The same goes for unsolicited DMs on social media.
Audiences hate being spammed content, so mix it up and posts different types of content on your social media platforms. Create organic connections online with people who you feel would be interested in hearing your music. Comment, Like, Share on social media to start creating an authentic community.
⠀
2. Don’t Rush to Release Your Art
Too often we see artists rushing their releases. How on Earth are you going to promote a song you plan to release in the next few days? There’s a reason labels take 3 or more weeks to develop a plan, strategy and promotional content around their releases. Do your research and send your music to blogs, YouTube channels, and other promotional resources that you feel your content would fit with their audiences. Make content for Instagram, YouTube, and Twitter according to their dimensions. Take your time, build up momentum, and leave at least 2-3 weeks before releasing a track.
⠀
3. Be Consistent
The lack of consistency can kill your brand faster than anything. If you aren’t constantly posting about yourself, your creative process and musical content, your audience will get tired fast. Engage with your audience often, daily if possible. And schedule how often you’re going to release music, etc. Keep it lively, refreshing and make sure it is authentic to who you are. Get to know your fans and pay attention to what type of content they engage with the most.
⠀
4. Own Your Branding
Branding is EVERYTHING in the music industry. Look at your favorite artists and study their branding techniques. See what it is about them that got you interested in them in the first place. Poor branding will lead to nobody wanting to check you out. Branding is more than just a logo and cover art. Content, messaging, color and styles all play a part in what is appealing to your fans. If you need to, make tweaks or rebrand until you get it right.
